LME 545 Service Project Plan
Bert Becker
The need that my pupils agreed on, is the clean-up and upgrade of the Nature Trail that is located on our school grounds. They have noticed that the trash needs to be picked up and that there needs to be more plants and more animal friendly habitats. They noticed that there needs to be more done to get the community involved keeping the trail looking nice and that all can enjoy it. They also noted that there needs to be more advertisement around the neighborhood to let people know that it is there. This project will be a neighborhood/school based project that meets the needs of the immediate area.
The objectives of the project will be as follows:
1. To clean up the nature trail.
2. To plant new plants.
3. To get others involved.
4. To advertise the nature trail at Moore High School to the community.
Connection to Curriculum:
Performance Based Credit:
· standards-based internship, cooperative learning experience or other supervised
learning experience in the school and the community
allows students to pursue internships, cooperative learning experiences and other
learning experiences in the school and community
Core Content: Science
WHST.9-12.9 Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. (HS-LS1-6)
SL.11-12.5 Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings,
reasoning, and evidence and to add interest. (HS-LS1-5),(HS-LS1-7)
HS-LS2-6. Evaluate the claims, evidence, and reasoning that the complex interactions in ecosystems maintain relatively consistent numbers and types of organisms in stable conditions, but changing conditions may result in a new ecosystem.
HS-LS2-7. Design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity.
HS-LS4-6. Create or revise a simulation to test a solution to mitigate adverse impacts of human activity on biodiversity.
HS-ETS1-3. Evaluate a solution to a complex real-world problem based on prioritized criteria and trade-offs that account for a range of constraints, including cost, safety, reliability, and aesthetics, as well as possible social, cultural, and environmental impacts.
Technology
5.2 Students use creative thinking skills to develop or invent novel, constructive ideas or products.
technology can assist in researching, analyzing and evaluating information obtained from a
variety of sources to answer an essential question across all content areas.
technology supports research and development to solve problems and produce results in
authentic situations.
ideas, solutions and designs (e.g., intellectual property) created through technology are used in a knowledge-based economy.
· use technology to express creativity in all content areas
· design, develop, publish and present original innovative products (e.g., Web pages, video, online content)
6.1 Students connect knowledge and experiences from different subject areas.

· It should be noted that in my lesson plan for my students I would have not use Weebly as a website if they choose to do their project on making a website/blog. Weebly does not allow many things to be done, like attaching, embedding videos, uploading videos, or using other applications such as Smartdraw on the website.
Collaboration:
There is collaboration between the LME and the classroom teacher. She helped the students to research ways to improve a nature trail in the library. She also helped with helping students to present their knowledge in a multimedia project.
The environmental science also help to coordinate the clean up and planting of new plants in the nature trial. Students will use the plans the environmental teacher has envisioned for the nature trail.
The English teacher also gave some reading material on how to present the students information in writing.
Learning Targets
Directions:
Knowledge Target
Reasoning Target
Performance Skill Target
Product Target
1. I can correctly identify the need for a nature trail and the importance of it for the environment.
2. I can see how fragile the environment and relate that to what I learned in my biology class
3. I can gather, interpret, and analyze information that I collect and apply it to a multimedia project.
4. I can produce a multimedia project that incorporates awareness to the community of its role and/or the importance of maintaining its upkeep.
Student Instructions
1. Students will fill out survey. (here)
2. Students will do research on what are some animal friendly structures that can help out a nature trail and also will research different kinds of plants that can be planted.
3. Students will organize a day to go and pick up trash and clean up brush in the nature trail.
4. Students will document their actions by taking pictures or video.
5. Students will research ways that they can let the community know about the nature trail and advertise it.
6. Students will gather all their data and information and make a multimedia presentation on either their efforts to revitalize the nature trail or how to advertise it to the community.
Objectives, Assessment, and Instruction:
Content Objective (4-part objective): Students will help in cleaning up and improving the nature trail and advertise it to the community so that it can be used.
Pre-assessment:
Students will use their knowledge of cleaning the environment and gather pictures and information on the nature trail.
Instruction:
Students will then be directed to choose a multimedia format to inform others of keeping the area clean and/or will create an information piece for the school and the community.
Post-assessment:
Students will present their project to the class and will be graded on the use of multimedia by a rubric.
Technology Objective (4-part objective):
Given a the use of technology of their choice, the students will create a multimedia project depicting their findings and their achievements in the restoration of the nature trail scoring a 3 or higher on the multimedia project rubric.
